How Our 17-Point Handicap System Works

Scoring in a Game:

When a player wins a league game, he or she gets ten points for the win plus one point for every ball the opponent has left on the table, while the losing player gets one point for each ball that he or she sinks. The total for the two players in a game always adds up to 17.

Player Rating:

Each player is assigned a rating between 1 and 17 that approximates his or her skill level. As the player plays more games in the league, the handicap will change to reflect his or her performance. This rating is the average number of points a player has made in their league games.

Team Handicap:

When the teams’ lineups for a round are set, the total ratings for each team are added up. The team with the higher numbered total must “give” the other team the difference in the totals. If a team’s total for a round is between 46 and 50 they must give up an “extra” 7 points for that round. If the total for a round is over 50 they must give up an “extra” 14 points for that round. Substitutions may affect the amount given by one team to the other.
